Up until about a month ago, Gavin could have cared less about the t.v. He was never a die hard fan of any shows (except Elmo) and really didn't ask to turn on the t.v. very often. When I did turn something on for him, he wouldn't pay any attention to it. It was actually frustrating! Sometimes you just need a break. Well, after a few bouts of sickness and several rainy and cold days Gavin is now addicted to the t.v. He LOVES it. He wakes up and asks for it on all day long. Yesterday I did this massive effort to deter him from it. We painted, played games and I even printed out some preschool worksheet and we played shcool. After each activity he would say, "can I watch a show now?" It was aweful. Gavin loves to play pretend so today when he asked for the t.v. I told him that the t.v. would ruin his imagination. That seemed to work for about five seconds and then I guess he thought that was a fine price to pay to watch Clifford. So, I guess I am going to be VERY busy the next few weeks with our T.V. detox. Thank goodness it is warm out today! I hope it stays that way!
What do you do to keep your kiddo's away from the boob tube?

We only have a little tv that we keep in our upstairs closet. We watch elmo 1-2 times a week or not at all depending on how busy our week is. Instead we do dvds 3-4 times a week on our laptop. We especially like the disney learning adventure series that each things using the winnie the pooh characters. Plus we get them for free from the library - bonus!
Chloe just recently went through a movie phase where she was asking for them every day too. I try to distract her with activities. I do think a little bit is good for her. Thanks to these dvds she learned to write several letters. Plus it's a nice downtime for her when she decides not to take a nap.
connor has just recently had a similar tv lapse. i was very comfortable with his desire level for the tube, but recently...probably due to sickness and just getting tired of being indoors.... he's been asking for it all the time. i do pretty much what you've done. activities seem to distract him and since it's been nice a few days here and there we've gone out on walks. otherwise, i just say, "no. it's not time." and if he whines he regrets it big time... as shyla would say, we have some "devotional thoughts" if that happens. but that's another issue. saying "yes ma'am" and having the right attitude has been another of his latest struggles.
